Cloud Data Governance
The policies, roles and tooling that control who can access what personal data across an organisation's cloud estate.
Full Definition
Cloud data governance applies classic governance principles — data ownership, classification, access control, lineage, retention, quality — to data that lives in cloud object stores, data warehouses, lakehouses and SaaS applications. The challenge is scale: a typical enterprise has petabytes of cloud data across dozens of accounts and hundreds of services, and manual governance does not survive first contact with that reality.
An effective programme pairs organisational discipline (clear data owners, published classification schema, mandatory tagging at ingest) with automated tooling: continuous discovery of personal data (DSPM), access-governance platforms that enforce purpose-based access, and lineage tools that show where data flows. Under GDPR Article 32, DPDP Section 8(5) and PDPA, the governance posture is the primary evidence of 'reasonable security safeguards' — not individual controls in isolation.
