Data Security Posture Management (DSPM)
A tooling category that continuously discovers personal and sensitive data across cloud environments, classifies it, maps who has access, and surfaces security risk.
Full Definition
Data Security Posture Management (DSPM) is the data-layer complement to CSPM (Cloud Security Posture Management). CSPM asks 'is this cloud account configured securely'; DSPM asks 'what sensitive data is in this cloud account, who has access, and what is the risk'. A DSPM platform continuously scans object stores, databases, data warehouses, lakehouses and SaaS applications for personal data, classifies it (PII, SPI, PHI, financial, children's data), maps identity-to-data access, and surfaces policy violations (public buckets of PII, overbroad access grants, retention-schedule breaches).
For a privacy programme, DSPM is the automated engine behind the data inventory, the DSR fulfilment pipeline, the breach-scoping workflow and the retention-automation layer. It is cited explicitly in Gartner's 2023+ data-security-platform taxonomy and is the fastest-growing category in enterprise data security. Under GDPR Article 32, DPDP Rule 11 (SDF obligations) and PDPA's Protection Obligation, DSPM-provided evidence (discovered data, access maps, policy-violation history) is a durable source of 'reasonable security safeguards' documentation.
