Data Residency
The jurisdiction in which personal data is physically stored and processed — a factor in both legal compliance and customer trust.
Full Definition
Data residency is sometimes used interchangeably with data localisation, but it is a broader concept. Residency is simply where data lives; localisation is a legal requirement that it live in a specific place. Many enterprise buyers ask for data-residency commitments (customer data stored in EU regions, India regions, UAE regions) as a procurement condition even when no law requires it, because residency gives them subject-access, breach-notification and sovereign-access assurance.
Cloud providers offer per-region deployments (AWS, Azure, GCP all have India, EEA, UAE and Singapore regions among others). Residency commitments are typically contractual, backed by provider-level configuration — a tenant metadata flag that forces all processing into a specific region, with cross-region replication disabled or routed through compliant endpoints. For a Data Fiduciary, residency maps to the transfer register and the lawful-basis analysis, and lets you honour customer-level residency requests without re-architecting the platform for each one.
