Certification
A formal assessment and seal confirming that an organisation's privacy or security controls meet a recognised standard.
Full Definition
Privacy and security certifications let third parties verify your controls against an external benchmark. ISO/IEC 27001 covers an Information Security Management System. ISO/IEC 27701 extends it to a Privacy Information Management System. SOC 2 reports (produced under AICPA SSAE 18) attest to the design and operating effectiveness of controls across security, availability, processing integrity, confidentiality and privacy. BS 10012, APEC CBPR and the EU GDPR Article 42 certification mechanisms (where approved) each serve similar roles in their jurisdictions.
Certifications matter for two reasons. For procurement, they let a prospective customer trust your controls without running their own audit. For compliance, GDPR Article 42 and Article 46(2)(f) permit approved certifications to serve as 'appropriate safeguards' for cross-border transfers. India's DPDP First Schedule contemplates independent certification of Consent Managers' platforms. UAE DIFC and ADGM both reference certification as part of acceptable transfer safeguards. A current, scoped-to-your-processing certification materially strengthens a regulator's mitigation finding if an incident reaches enforcement.
